With Open Arms

Are you thinking about joining us, or do you have questions about our faith and practice?
We are here for you.

The pressures of everyday life are many and often never-ending. They can wear us down and distort our understanding of ourselves and the world.

At RKUK, we walk together on a spiritual journey towards inner peace, fulfilment, and a life of meaning through helping others and caring for our common future.

Whether you would like to begin Buddhist practice, deepen your understanding of the Lotus Sutra, or simply learn more, you are warmly welcome to contact us.

Rissho Kosei-kai promotes interreligious cooperation. Our interpretation of the Lotus Sutra is inclusive and embraces the wider teachings of Buddhism.

Spiritual journeys in the UK

People come to RKUK from many different backgrounds. Some are new to Buddhism, some have practised in other traditions, and some are simply looking for a warm Sangha and a way to live with greater peace and purpose.

These stories share how members in the UK first encountered RKUK, began Buddhist practice, and found support for daily life.

Finding your flow

We are not robots. One size doesn’t fit all.

The practice of Buddhism is not limited to one path alone. Each person has a different background, life circumstances and character and desires.

RK recognises the preciousness and uniqueness of each individual and promotes tailored practices for personal spiritual growth.

What remains constant is that we will always honour and recognise the eternal value of the chanting of O-daimoku and the other three basic principles, which we encourage all members to put into practice:

  1. O-daimoku chanting
  2. Sutra recitation
  3. Reaching out to others
  4. Dharma study.

Events

Introduction to Buddhism and RKUK

An open and friendly session introducing the basic principles of Buddhism and how they are practised within RKUK – a Buddhist community based in London, practised across the UK and connected with a global movement. No prior knowledge needed. Feel free to attend and ask us anything. Please book in advance.

Sunday Service

A gentle weekly service where we pause at the start of the week, offer gratitude for the days that have passed, and renew our intention to live with care and awareness. Through sutra recitation, Dharma readings, and quiet reflection together, many people find this a supportive place to begin or continue their Buddhist journey.

Basic Buddhism Study Course

A welcoming ten-week study course for anyone wishing to learn the basic principles of Buddhism and practise them in daily life. Each session covers core teachings like the Four Noble Truths and the Twelve Causes and Conditions, helping you build a strong foundation and deepen your understanding of the Lotus Sutra.

Buddhist Centre

RKUK has opened a Buddhist centre in West London in 2020. Please feel free to visit us for practice and prayer as well as merely for the library and a preliminary inspection.

Online Programmes

Some events are offered on Zoom. You are recommended to take advantage of them in the case of living far from London or being unable to visit the Centre. Please check what events have online sessions and how to participate at respective contents of the Practice and Events pages.

You’ve found your family

There are more than 240,000 Buddhists in the UK. Yet none of us grows spiritually in isolation.

At RKUK, we would be very happy to get to know you, help you connect with the Buddha’s teachings, and welcome you into a warm community of practitioners.

If you would like to become a member, please complete the join form. After receiving your form, we will contact you personally and invite you to an Introduction to Buddhism and RKUK session, where we can explain the next steps and answer any questions.

When you feel ready to become part of our Sangha, you can become a member of RKUK through a basic monthly membership contribution of £5 per month.

This is not a fee for receiving services, but a personal expression of our vow to practise the bodhisattva way, walk together as part of the Sangha, and support the future of Buddhism and the Lotus Sutra in the UK.

If you are able and feel moved to give more than £5, any amount above this is gratefully received as a voluntary offering.

Some activities, courses, books, or practice items may have separate costs or suggested donations. You can read more about these here.

It is also OK to change your mind. You can withdraw your membership and cancel your ongoing contribution at any time. We simply ask you to let us know in advance.

Taking refuge in the Three Treasures

Buddhists devote themselves to the practice of taking refuge in the Three Treasures.

  1. Buddha −our great benevolent teacher, Shakyamuni Buddha
  2. Dharma − the enlightened teachings of Buddha
  3. Sangha − the community of practitioners who follow Buddha’s teachings.

These have been the fundamental principles of Buddhism for more than 2,000 years.

We believe this makes you a better person.

Members’ Vow

We ask our members to take this vow and take steps to live out its truth.

We members of  Rissho Kosei-kai
Take refuge in the Eternal Buddha Shakyamuni
And recognise in Buddhism a true way of liberation
Under the guidance of our revered founder, Nikkyo Niwano
In the spirit of lay Buddhists, we vow to perfect ourselves
Through personal discipline and leading others
And by improving our knowledge and practice of the faith
We pledge ourselves to follow the bodhisattva way
To bring peace to our families, communities, and countries
And to the world.

To learn more about our Members’ Vow, read here.

What does practice look like after joining RKUK?

Buddhist practice begins from where you are.

Some members begin by chanting the O-daimoku for a short time each day. Others start by joining Sunday services, study sessions, hoza, or other activities. Some also wish to learn about home practice, including the Gohonzon and sutra recitation.

You do not need to understand everything before joining. In the Introduction to Buddhism and RKUK session, we will explain the different forms of practice and help you find a way to begin that suits your circumstances.

We will walk with you step by step.

Here are a few FAQs

No. RKUK does not advise you to leave any other religious group that you may already be a part of. You are free to explore the adventure of other spiritual practices.

RKUK will not necessarily advise you to remove them.

Our basic monthly membership contribution is £5 per month.

This contribution helps support the life and activities of RKUK, including our Buddhist centre, services, study courses, pastoral support, online activities, and the wider work of sharing Buddhism and the Lotus Sutra in the UK.

Membership contribution is not a charge for attending activities or receiving services. It is a personal expression of one’s vow to practise the bodhisattva way and support the Sangha.

Any amount above £5 is entirely voluntary and is received with gratitude as an offering.

There may be some other small expenses if you wish to have practice items at home, such as prayer beads, sash, or Kyoten for sutra recitation. Books and practice items are available through our shop and library, but there is no obligation to buy anything before joining.
