First-day devotions of the month (Uposatha Day)

First-day devotions of the month (Uposatha Day) is one of Rissho Kosei-kai’s monthly memorial days (with 4th, 10th and 15th days).

By revering the Buddha through sincere recitation of Kyoten (the Lotus Sutra), we remember and praise the virtues and teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha and our founder and cofounder, as well as express our deep gratitude. We also read the president’s monthly message and deepen our understanding by Hoza (a Dharma circle).

First-day devotions of the month allow us: 1) to reflect on the meaning and purpose of our lives; 2) to reaffirm the Eternal Buddha as our refuge and focus of devotion; 3) to become aware that we are sustained by the Eternal Buddha; and 4) to renew our vows to be diligent in practising the Buddha’s teachings and have a concrete goal of the month at its very beginning.

Uposatha Day is a historical Buddhist practice since Shakyamuni Buddha’s age. His disciples gathered together twice a month to confirm the precepts and perform acknowledgement and remorse reflecting on themselves.

This event is open to anyone, including non-members. We are happy to welcome you all. You can actively involve yourself in the talks, or it is also nice to take a seat, listening or meditating during the event in a quiet and peaceful atmosphere.
