Annual Memorial Day of Cofounder Myoko Naganuma

A life of compassion, lived through everyday practice

Cofounder Myoko Naganuma (1889–1957) devoted her life to practising the teachings of the Lotus Sutra and bringing compassion into the lives of the people around her.

She lived through the upheaval of war and its aftermath, yet continued to show through her own actions that Buddhist practice is not separate from everyday life. Her deep concern for others, and her determination to put the bodhisattva way into practice whatever the circumstances, became a source of encouragement and inspiration for the early members of Rissho Kosei-kai.

Her annual commemoration is therefore not simply a time to remember someone from the history of our movement. It is an opportunity to ask what compassion and Buddhist practice might look like in our own lives today.

Remembering with gratitude

During the service, we recite Kyoten (the Lotus Sutra) together and express our gratitude for Cofounder Naganuma’s life and example.

We also learn more about her life and practice through a short video or text, before reflecting together in Hoza (a Dharma circle). Through listening and sharing, we consider how the same spirit of compassion and service can take shape in our relationships, families, workplaces and communities today.

You do not need to know anything about Cofounder Naganuma beforehand. Whether you are already part of our sangha or are simply interested in discovering how the Lotus Sutra can be lived in everyday life, you are warmly welcome.
