Remembering the Buddha’s life and awakening with gratitude
The Commemoration of Shakyamuni Buddha Entering Nirvana, also known as Parinirvana Day, marks the day on which Shakyamuni Buddha is traditionally said to have entered parinirvana — complete liberation beyond birth and death.
In the Buddhist tradition, this day is not observed as one of sorrow, but as an occasion of gratitude. It invites us to reflect on the Buddha’s life and teachings, and to recognise that the wisdom and compassion he embodied continue to guide and sustain our lives today.
Through this ceremony, we reaffirm our connection to the Buddha’s awakening and renew our own aspiration to live in a way that brings benefit to others.
What we do together
During the service, we reverently recite Kyoten (the Lotus Sutra), expressing our gratitude for the Buddha’s teachings and the virtues they embody.
We also watch a short video reflecting on the significance of Shakyamuni Buddha’s entering nirvana, and take time to share reflections through Hoza (a Dharma circle). By listening to one another’s experiences and insights, we deepen our understanding of how the Buddha’s teachings continue to live through our own lives.
A day of reflection and renewal
The Commemoration of Shakyamuni Buddha Entering Nirvana is one of the major annual observances in Buddhism.
Rather than looking back at the Buddha as a distant historical figure, this day encourages us to recognise the Buddha’s life as something alive and present — something that continues to inspire how we think, act, and relate to others in the world today.
