Basic Buddhism Study Course

Welcome to our Basic Buddhism Study Course!

This gentle and supportive ten-week class is open to everyone who would like to learn the essential teachings and practices of Buddhism.

Over ten sessions, we explore universal principles such as the Four Noble Truths and the Twelve Causes and Conditions, building a clear, balanced foundation in Basic Buddhism. Through this, we naturally deepen our understanding of the spirit of practice taught in the Lotus Sutra – one of the most important texts in Mahayana Buddhism.

This course is ideal for:

  • complete beginners who are curious about Buddhism,

  • practising Buddhists who wish to revisit core teachings,

  • and anyone interested in the spirit of the Lotus Sutra or Nichiren Buddhism.

All are warmly welcome – you do not need to be a member to join.

What we cover
  1. Overview of Buddhism
  2. Taking refuge in the Three Treasures
  3. Make yourself the light, make the Dharma your light
  4. Three Seals of the Dharma
  5. The Four Noble Truths
  6. Dependent Origination and the Ten Suchnesses
  7. Karma and Transmigration
  8. The Twelve Causes and Conditions
  9. The Eightfold Path and Middle Way
  10. The Six Paramitas [Perfections]
  11. Bridge to the Lotus Sutra (The Mutual Inclusion of the Ten Realms / Three Thousand Elements of Reality in a Single Thought, or Ichinen Sanzen)
More than just study

Learning the Dharma is not about blind belief – it is about understanding the teachings, putting them into practice in daily life, and experiencing their benefits for ourselves.
By studying the significance of each principle, we can practise joyfully and deepen our insight into the Buddha’s path.

Sunday Service

A gentle weekly service where we pause at the start of the week, offer gratitude for the days that have passed, and renew our intention to live with care and awareness. Through sutra recitation, Dharma readings, and quiet reflection together, many people find this a supportive place to begin or continue their Buddhist journey.
