Ceremonial Sash
What is it?
This ceremonial sash is worn across the chest during the O-daimoku chanting, sutra recitation and other services in Rissho Kosei-kai.
It serves as a gentle reminder to bring one’s mind into focus, to show respect to the Buddha, and to enter the practice with sincerity.
Wearing the sash is not a sign of rank or status; rather, it expresses your commitment to the practice and your connection to the Sangha.
The way it is worn also symbolises bearing the right shoulder, a traditional gesture of reverence used by disciples of the Buddha in ancient times.
Part of the Three Essential Items for Practice
In Rissho Kosei-kai, the ceremonial sash is one of the three essential items used during devotional practice, together with:
- the sutra book (Kyoten)
- Buddhist prayer beads
- the ceremonial sash
These three items are used together when offering sutra recitation and forming a sincere connection with the Buddha.
How to Wear It
- Place the sash over the left shoulder,
- Bring it diagonally across the chest,
- And let it rest on the right side of the body.
This represents the ancient respectful posture.
The printed characters (O-daimoku) appear on both sides, and a small red seal is stamped on the back.
