Flint and Steel Purification Set
This is a traditional flint-and-steel set used for kiribi—a brief purification ritual performed before commencing sutra recitation. The set includes a flint stone and a steel striker designed for comfortable, reliable use.
In Rissho Kosei-kai, kiribi is carried out after preparing the altar and just before beginning the devotional sutra recitation. Holding the steel striker in the left hand and the flint in the right, practitioners strike them together to produce small sparks. These are offered symbolically toward the altar—left, right, and centre—three times each, for a total of nine strikes.
The sparks represent the clearing of unwholesome influences and the refreshing of one’s mind before practice.
